en·coun·ter

verb \in-ˈkau̇n-tər, en-\ : to meet (someone) without expecting or intending to

I always find it fascinating to strike up conversation with complete strangers because there is ALWAYS something you could learn from them. No matter who they are, what they do, or where they came from one can learn a lot from someone with a different perspective on life.

This section of the blog is dedicated to those interesting people we meet along the way that have an impact on our lives. Different people affect us in different ways, so we will dive into exactly how the encounters went and why they deserve to have their stories shared with the world.

The Japanese Fish Monger

Name: Ishi

Profession: Fisherman
Location: Ryu Sushi, Tsujiki Fish Market, Tokyo, Japan
Reason for Meeting: Stumbled into a restaurant off of the beaten path

Story: Upon entering the restaurant, Ishi peered over from his usual spot at the sushi counter and looked back at us as typical Americans. I am sure he had many preconceived notions as to who we were and what we were about, but I can gladly say that we proved him wrong.

After finishing a 7-course sushi lunch while directly next to this ‘sushi wizard’ of sorts — I learned more about sushi customs than I ever knew before. He told me the intricacies behind every fish that I was served, and what the different types signified. I learned that sushi (raw fish atop rice) wasn’t considered all that special in Japan, but sashimi (slices of raw fish by themselves – without rice) was considered to be the highest of delicacies, if done right.

Sake is a typical drink that is paired with sushi, however, it is a drink that should be drank in a specific way while enjoying the meal at hand, which I was completely unaware of. You are supposed to have a small amount of sake, just an ounce or two in size, only after you eat a piece of sushi, or sashimi. If you drink any other way, you may look as if you are abusing the alcohol at hand, and not enjoying the food quite as much.

Parting Words of Wisdom: Enjoy, but always respect.

Pollito

Mascot Name: Pollito

Destination: Mexico City
Means of Acquisition: Chased a street vendor down the block to buy it during our first few hours in Mexico City

Description: Pollito was the best purchase we made while in Mexico City. We considered him to be another member of the team, and he became a local celebrity by the end of the trip.

Personality: Pollito is a very mischievous character. He liked getting into weird situations that the rest of the Crew did not want to do, and really liked the lights shining on him at all times!

Mexican Familia

Name(s): (From right to left) Maureen, Andrea, Priscilla (Prix), and Lety

Profession(s): Professional Socialites
Location: Mexico City, Mexico
Reason for Meeting: The filming of the OU Pilot

Story: Prix is a long time friend of ours who we finally came out to see on her home turf of Mexico. We were able to meet the three other members of our newly formed Mexican Familia through Prix and have been privileged enough to see some of the greatest things Mexico City has to offer because of them.

Maureen: sister of Priscilla and the birthday girl of the weekend
Andrea: the life of the party
Priscilla: professional socialite of the group
Lety: the wildcard of the group

These girls have been some of the most gracious people we have come across, and really owe our great time in Mexico to them.

Parting Words of Wisdom: Nothing should dictate your view of a place other than your own eyes.

Dr. Martin Segal

Name: Dr. Martin Segal

Profession: Professor of Business Law at the University of Miami
Location: Panther Coffee in Wynwood, Miami
Reason for Meeting: I sat down at the table next to Dr. Segal and his better half, Linda, where I gave them a free latte as the bar duped my original order.

Story: To say there was just one thing to learn from my encounter with Dr. Segal would be a complete fabrication.

We shared our stories, I elaborated on what my next adventure entailed, and he was fascinated so I guess I am actually doing something a bit interesting for once! He essentially looked at my accident as an ‘early’-life crisis wherein I was able to take a step back and really see everything for what it was.

His overall degree of intellect is a rare asset in Miami, FL, and he will be a great contact to keep in touch with going forward onto our adventure.

Parting Words of Wisdom: The universal energy has a special plan for you that is unfolding before your eyes – notice and enjoy it every day.
